In writing the book I owe more than I can specify to the many authors who down the ages and in our own time have written about or commented on conversation. At one time or another I have probably seen or read most of their discussions, and assimilated much of what I read. Often it has become too much a part of me to be able to place. But where I could recall the source and wording, quotations and references in the text are the grateful as well as informative acknowledgment. Since the book is more or less informal, exact references were given only where some special purpose was to be served. To these general acknowledgments must be added a special one to Father Clement J. Lambert, editor of the Mari-anist Magazine, for eliciting my first articles on the topic. |
